Building NP and PA Unity Through Education, Leadership, and Collaboration

In the second part of their discussion, PAs Aaron Sookhoo, PA-C, of Tampa Bay, Florida, and Andrew Mastro, PA-C, of Chicago, Illinois, shared their long-term vision for the National Dermatology Leadership Summit (NDLS) and their advice for advanced practice providers aspiring to step into leadership roles. Both leaders, who serve as vice presidents of their respective state dermatology PA societies, remain united in their mission to strengthen the national dermatology APP community through collaboration, empowerment, and education.

Looking ahead, Sookhoo envisions the NDLS evolving into a rotating national event, hosted by different states each year to promote inclusivity and statewide engagement. His ultimate goal—“50 states, 50 societies”—reflects a vision of a unified national network of dermatology PAs and NPs working together to advance the profession. Mastro echoed this shared ambition, noting that continued growth and collaboration among state chapters will amplify advocacy efforts, enhance patient care, and expand opportunities for professional development across the country.

When asked about leadership advice, both emphasized the importance of passion, perseverance, and teamwork. Mastro encouraged emerging leaders to start with a strong sense of purpose and an ambitious idea, one that challenges convention and drives lasting impact. He underscored the value of surrounding oneself with diverse, supportive colleagues who can offer perspective and balance through challenges. Sookhoo shared his own experience of “taking a leap of faith” into leadership after encouragement from a colleague, reflecting on how rewarding the journey has been and urging others to get involved—whether by joining an existing state society or helping to form a new one.

Both concluded with an open invitation to PAs and NPs nationwide to engage with the NDLS initiative. They emphasized that the summit is designed to be collaborative, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of dermatology APPs from diverse regions and practice settings. Their shared message: leadership in dermatology is accessible to all who are willing to contribute, collaborate, and carry the profession forward together.
