Moving the Needle on Ethics includes articles and interviews featuring experts in aesthetics.
Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, recently announced the launch of Moving the Needle on Ethics, a book published in collaboration with medical aesthetics experts to bring more awareness to ethics in aesthetics. The variety of expert articles and interviews emphasize the need for “industry-wide transparency and integrity to meet the expected increase in global demand for aesthetics treatments.”1
According to a global aesthetic market study from 2021, the global medical aesthetics industry is constantly growing, with 23 million dermal fillers and 14.6 million body procedures predicted by 2025.2 The increased need for high ethical standards and proper education is crucial.
Allergan’s Moving the Needle on Ethics uses previous research data to evaluate the ethical landscape of aesthetic medicine and emphasizes the importance of ethical excellence through a variety of scenarios, including consultation, social media, training and education, product quality, and patient care. Overall, the goal of the publication is to support patient safety and positive outcomes.
"We are at a unique moment in the evolution of our industry, and we must ensure that ethics is front and center in our minds and in our clinical practice. A coordinated effort is needed to reconsider the guiding principles of ethics, ensuring patient safety is prioritized,” said Mauricio de Maio, MD, a plastic surgeon from Brazil, in the news release.
To further promote ethics in medical aesthetics, the Allergan Medical Institute (AMI) implemented an early injectors training program on ethics. Starting this year, aesthetic practitioners will receive training on the key Aesthetic Medicine ethics principles. AMI expects to add this training module to its core curriculum and expand educational offerings on ethics to practitioners of all experience levels.
"The goal of this research is to raise the subject of ethics in aesthetics to a new, more transparent level by sharing data from those who participate in it every day. Recognizing that ethics plays a key role in aesthetics and elevating that conversation is critical for the success of this growing, healthy market and delivering safe aesthetic outcomes for patients,” said Carrie Strom, president of Global Allergan Aesthetics, in the news release.
Allergan’s Moving the Needle on Ethics features articles from Jonquille Chantrey, MD; Cara McDonald, MD; Hytham Jamjoom, MD, FRCSC; Marcel Vinicius, MD; Marva Safa, MD; Kavita Mariwalla, MD; Shannon Humphrey, MD, FRCPC, FAAD; Sophie Shotter, MD; Zhang Yuguang, MD; and Kiyoko Kat, MD.
