Buccal Fat Pad Reduction

Author(s):

Dr. Parker A. Velargo discusses the increased popularity of buccal fat reduction for facial contouring in his recent presentation at the AAFPRS 2020 virtual meeting.

At the recent American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) virtual meeting, Parker A. Velargo, MD, facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, New Orleans Center for Aesthetics and Plastic Surgery, New Orleans, La., discussed the rise in popularity of buccal fat pad reduction in younger patients in his presentation, “Buccal Fat Pad Reduction: Pearls and Pitfalls.”

According to Dr. Velargo, ideal candidates are those with facial fullness, minimal definition to the cheekbones, and a poorly defined jawline.

Dr. Velargo describes removing the buccal fat pad using a small-incision intra-orbital approach as a less invasive method compared to external removal, which generally accompanies a facelift.
