Christopher Bunick, MD, Talks Antibiotic Stewardship at Fall Clinical

Christopher Bunick, MD, shares highlights of his session from the 2022 Fall Clinical conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 20-23.

Transcript:

I'm Christopher Bunick, associate professor and physician scientist at Yale University in the Department of Dermatology, and I'm really excited today to highlight the upcoming talk on antibiotic stewardship at the 2022 Fall Clinical dermatology meeting in Las Vegas.

Dr. Emmy Graber and I are going to be talking about antibiotic stewardship. It's a very important concept in dermatology, but one that we don't really understand fully and our hope in this session is to really delve into some of the specifics about antibiotic stewardship. What does it mean to practice good antibiotic stewardship and how can dermatologists do it better? What are the innovations and antibiotics in dermatology that allow us to do better antibiotic stewardship? So we're going to examine the narrow spectrum vs broad spectrum antibiotic concept, particularly within the family of tetracycline, looking at some of the science behind sarecycline and a narrow spectrum agent, and some of the broad spectrum, tetracycline is like doxycycline and minocycline. We're going to delve into some of the relationships between science and side effects of antibiotics and how antibiotic stewardship can lead to reduced side effects including GI upset, headache, dizziness, photosensitivity, and alteration of the gut microbiome. We know that the microbiome is a really hot topic now in in all of medicine. And so how is antibiotic stewardship playing a role in protecting the microbiome not just to the gut, but also of the skin? So that's a very interesting and exciting concept that we'll touch on.

We're also going to look at some of the innovation elsewhere in acne. There's a new triple combination topical therapy that should be hitting the market sometime soon. And how is that advantageous? How does that actually lead to antibiotic stewardship? And what is the benefit of this triple combination? We're also going to explore some of those deep questions when it comes to acne treatment that come up with our patients s well, such as, “I'm on birth control, how do I alter that? Or should I alter that if I'm taking an oral antibiotic?” We're going to look at other aspects of oral antibiotics with regard to how did the antibiotics affect the birth control? How did the antibiotics affect the gut microbiome? How do antibiotics help us as dermatologists treat our patients and what is it about the antibiotics beyond their antibiotic function such as their anti-inflammatory functions that allow us to help our patients achieve better remission of their disease, whether it's acne or other things that we're treating. So ultimately, I'm very excited about this session on antibiotic stewardship with Dr. Graber. And I think that we're going to have a lot of fun. We're going to bring a lot of new pearls therapeutic pearls for the audience to understand about how to care for that acne patient.
