Dermatologist Shares Tips for Attending Annual Meeting

Dermatology Times chatted with Sonya Kenkare, MD, FAAD, for tips on navigating the annual meeting.

Sonya Kenkare, MD, FAAD, sat with Dermatology Times to discuss the upcoming American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting held this year March 8 - 12, 2024, in San Diego, California. “I'm excited to attend the AAD meeting this year in sunny San Diego to collaborate with my colleagues and to learn about all the innovations across the board, from cosmetics to surgery to complex medical dermatology,” she told Dermatology Times. Kenkare is a board certified dermatologist in Hinsdale, Illinois.

Among the highlights of the meeting, Kenkare, who has participated in Dermatology Times roundtable discussions, are the sessions highlighting treatment advances. “There are a lot of new medications that have been released in the last couple of years and medications that are due to come out within the next year or 2 that I think could offer a lot of new options for patients,” she shared with Dermatology Times.

Juggling a busy practice and a new family, Kenkare added that finding time for it all can be challenging, but she was looking forward to another in-person meeting. She shared advice for colleagues who have not previously had the opportunity to attend an AAD Annual Meeting. “To maximize your time, take a look at the agenda in advance,” she explained. “There are so many concurrent sessions, so making a little bit of a plan for the ones that you really want to attend will let you attend the talks that are the highest yield for your interests.”

As an avid reader of Dermatology Times, Kenkare also looks to the DermatologyTimes.com to help stay up to date on sessions she is unable to attend.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of the meeting is bumping into colleagues and sharing ideas in between sessions. “I look forward to meeting people at the American Academy of Dermatology meeting this year,” she said. “So if you're around, definitely say hello!”
