Dermatology Times had the opportunity to speak with numerous leading KOLs in the industry, live and virtually, at the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs.
The 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs concluded last weekend in Orlando, Florida. The 8th annual meeting brought together dermatologists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to collaboratively discuss how to improve patient care in dermatology.
At the meeting, Dermatology Times® met with many of the presenters, both live and virtually, to discuss what they wanted attendees to take away from their sessions, the value of dermatology meetings that bring together all care providers, and more.
Watch the interviews below if you weren't able to attend sessions in-person or want to review key treatment pearls from the leading experts.
James Del Rosso, DO, a practicing dermatologist and research director at JDR Dermatology Research in Las Vegas, Nevada, senior vice president of clinical research and strategic development at Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Maitland, Florida, and senior director of the Dermsquared clinical advisory board, presented “What You Really Need to Know About Rosacea,” “What's Coming Up Next,” and “What's New in the Medicine Chest.”
At the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs, Lauren Miller, PA-C, a board-certified dermatology physician assistant at Southern Skies Dermatology & Surgery in Alabama, discussed with attendees how to effectively build their cover letter to stand out among other applicants, what PAs and NPs need to know about managing atopic dermatitis with biologics, and office tips for improving efficiency.
“My own physician assistant, Monique, she's priceless. I can't live without her; she works with me on the research side. So if the value of a PA in an office has to be demonstrated, I'll just show you her picture,” said Neal Bhatia, MD, before the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs. Bhatia, the director of clinical dermatology at Therapeutic Clinical Research in San Diego, California, is presenting 3 sessions at the meeting, including what attendees need to know about JAKs and TYKs, as well as the PAs and NP's role in clinical trials and research.
Dermatology Times’® Editorial Advisory Board member, Christopher Bunick, MD, PhD, presented at the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs alongside Lauren Miller, PA-C, and Gil Yosipovitch, MD, to discuss how biologics and advanced systemic therapies are able to improve the lives of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). Bunick, an associate professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine and a physician-scientist, and his colleagues reviewed numerous topics during their panel discussion, including the mechanism of action of cytokines in AD, how all AD patients can’t be grouped into the same category, what to do when providers have a patient that is on a biologic or systemic therapy and they have an impetiginized AD flare, and more.
Dermatology Times® spoke with board-certified physician assistant, Sydney Givens, on her session at the Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs, “What You Really Need to Know About Cosmeceuticals” in Orlando, Florida. Givens sees patients at both Wiregrass Dermatology and the Southern Institute of Plastic Surgery. In her session, Givens stressed the importance of all dermatology providers being aware of the types of cosmeceuticals patients are using. For the best skin health, patients should be consulting their dermatology provider, not social media influencers or paid media advertising, according to Givens.
In an interview with Dermatology Times®, Matthew Reynolds, PA-C, a practicing physician assistant at Arkansas Dermatology, discussed his presentation from the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs, “Co-Managing Patients With Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma (aBCC) and Advanced Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (aCSCC) in the Immunotherapy Era.” Reynolds encouraged the PA and NP community to use cemiplimab (Libtayo; Regeneron) as an efficacious treatment for patients with advanced non-melanoma skin cancers.
At the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs, Linda Stein Gold, MD, met with Dermatology Times® to discuss her sessions, “Using New Treatments for Atopic Dermatitis” and “Treating Your Tough Acne Patients.” Stein Gold, the director of dermatology clinical research at Henry Ford Hospital, reviewed new and upcoming AD treatments, including dupilumab, tralokinumab, lebrikizumab, abrocitinib, and upadacitinib. During her tough acne session, Stein Gold reviewed her best pearls for acne management, including a benzoyl peroxide cleanser, topical retinoids, topical tazarotene lotion, trifarotene cream, sarecycline, and more.
Joshua Ziechner, MD, spoke with Dermatology Times® at the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs to discuss his best acne treatment pearls during the “15 Tips in 15 Minutes” session. Zeichner, associate professor of dermatology and director of cosmetic and clinical research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, presented alongside Mark Lebwohl, MD, the dean for clinical therapeutics, chairman emeritus of the Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman department of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Closing out the final day of sessions at the 2023 Fall Clinical Dermatology Conference for PAs and NPs, Michael Cameron, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai in New York City and founder of Cameron Dermatology LLC, sat down with Dermatology Times® to discuss his psoriasis and pigmentary disorders sessions’ key highlights, including the importance of not categorizing a patient’s psoriasis as “mild” when speaking to them and how to step back and accurately diagnose pigmentary lesions.
