Is it possible to fill in large facial pores with cosmetics?

Zoe Diana Draelos, M.D.Dermatologists are frequently asked about solutions to large pores.  Patients become concerned at puberty when hormonal production initiates sebaceous gland activity and pores appear over the nose and medial cheeks.  These pores appear to increase in size throughout life with some confusing pores for open comedones.  As the subcutaneous facial fat is lost, pores become even more prominent even though sebaceous gland activity decreases.  Many cosmetics claim to reduce the appearance of pores, but none claim to reduce pores or get rid of pores as these would be drug claims.

Reducing the appearance of pores can be accomplished with cosmetics, such as pigmented facial foundations that can be rubbed in the pore to reduce the shadow of the depressed pore and improve appearance until the cosmetic is removed.  Other cosmetics, such as facial powders containing light reflective particles, can further increase pore light reflection.  Finally, there are silicone based gels and waxes that can be rubbed over the pore as a primer to smooth the depressions over which a pigmented facial foundation can be placed.  These cosmetic solutions are quite effective, but temporary and only fill in the pore structures.  As long as the products used are noncomedogenic, no skin damage will occur.
