Mast, who has been a dermatology physician associate for more than 20 years, is currently the medical director of dermatology and allergy for Novartis. She has also served the SDPA in many positions throughout the years, including chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee, Director at Large on the Board of Directors, trustee at large for the Dermatology PA Foundation, and SDPA President. In addition to receiving the award, she participated in a panel discussion on medical science liaisons.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is named after the founder of the SDPA and the first president of the organization, Joe Monroe, MPAS, PA. He has also contributed to the field via publications and speaking, sharing his knowledge and experiences to help support PA colleagues. In an interview a few years ago, Monroe shared advice to early career Derm PAs:2

Dive in, live it, drink it, read about it, see the patients, ask questions, attend conferences. I actually tell them this: if you want to become a derm PA, do what derm PAs do. Singers sing players play, derm PAs derm.

Mast embodies many of the same characteristics and commitment to the field of dermatology, the profession, and patient care. In her LinkedIn profile, she shares a quote from Simon Sinek:

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.

In presenting Mast with the award, Amber Blair, PA-C, president of the SDPA, told attendees, “Her legacy is marked by unwavering commitment, excellence and her advocacy… Jane exemplifies the epitome of dedication, leadership, and advocacy within the dermatology PA community and broader community.”

Mast sat down with Dermatology Times to discuss the award, the importance of giving back to her PA community, and her thoughts on the upcoming year.
