Read This: AAFPRS Issue 1

There’s a new journal in town, according to a recent press release from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). Formerly JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, the AAFPRS assumed ownership and strategic stewardship of Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine effective January 1, 2020.

The journal, a bimonthly publication by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers, offers free access to all of its Issue 1 articles until March 10, 2020.

In this issue, Editor-in-Chief John S. Rhee introduces the new journal, calling Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine “The Best of Both Worlds.”

Gary Faigin, facial expression expert, and Wayne F. Larrabee Jr, M.D., offer a historical viewpoint of the role of the smile in facial expression in “The Art of the Smile.”

In “How Old Do I Look? Exploring the Facial Cues of Age in a Tasked Eye-Tracking Study,” David Liao, et al. report on their eye-tracking study to investigate facial aging cues that could help physicians better target ideal areas of rejuvenation.

Notably, this first issue includes a Special Communication with renowned nose expert Dean Toriumi, M.D. entitled, “Nasal Tip Contouring: Anatomic Basis for Management,” in which he addresses the complexity of nasal tip contouring and offers techniques that may assist other rhinoplasty surgeons. Dr. Rhee also interviews Dr. Toriumi in the article “Evolution of a Rhinoplasty Master.”

“Dr. Toriumi has been a generational thought leader in rhinoplasty. This is yet another blockbuster article that takes us along on his personal decades-long journey and evolution in addressing the nasal tip,” said Editor-in-Chief John S. Rhee, M.D., MPH, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, in the release.
