Science Behind OTC Products to Enhance Care for Atopic Dermatitis, Acne, and Sun Protection

Menes Kizoulis shared key highlights from the research conducted alongside leading dermatologists, like Alan Irvine, MD, DSc, and Patricia Farris, MD, MS.

Kenvue's scientific research team presented for the first-time ever at the at the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in San Diego, California March 8-12. Aside from feeling the energy of nearly 20,000 meeting attendees, Menes Kizoulis, senior director of global scientific engagement and activation at Kenvue, said he was thrilled to have the opportunity to share the science and in-depth research from 22 clinical data sets behind widely-recognized and utilized consumer products to enhance atopic dermatitis, acne, and sun protection care. In an interview with Dermatology Times, he shared key highlights from the research conducted alongside leading dermatologists, like Alan Irvine MD, DSc from Dublin, Ireland, and Patricia Farris, MD, MS, and Dermatology Times Editorial Advisory Board member.

Advancements in Hydro Boost Technology

One notable highlight from the interview was the introduction of a new product under the Hydro Boost line. Kizoulis explained, "We conducted a combination of preclinical and clinical research to evaluate the benefits of our new water cream on the skin." The preclinical findings revealed the cream's ability to reinforce the skin barrier, a crucial characteristic for therapeutic moisturizers. Clinical tests encompassed diverse skin types, including acne-prone and sensitive conditions like rosacea and atopic dermatitis, ensuring the product's tolerance across various patient profiles.1

Scientific Rigor in Acne Treatment

Moving into the realm of acne treatment, Kizoulis emphasized their commitment to scientific rigor. "We conducted a study on our Neutrogena acne hydrocolloid patches, aiming to provide evidence of their efficacy," he explained. The research demonstrated the patches' effectiveness in reducing lesion size and preventing additional picking, addressing a common concern among acne patients.2

Oat and Science in Skincare

The discussion extended to studies related to oat and science in skincare, particularly focusing on the brand's Aveeno line. Kizoulis highlighted a multicultural study in Brazil, showcasing positive outcomes in reducing eczema and promoting a shift in the skin microbiome towards a healthier balance. Another collaborative study with dermatologists explored the impact of using an oat-based moisturizer from birth, revealing a reduction in eczema incidence and a favorable shift in the skin microbiome.3

Sun Protection and Visible Light Studies

In the realm of sun protection, Kizoulis unveiled research findings related to UVA and visible light. The team explored the benefits of mineral sunscreens with tint, showcasing their role in preventing skin damage. Additional studies delved into patient preferences for sunscreens, addressing aesthetic concerns such as whitening effects.4

Innovative Formulations and Product Development

Kizoulis provided insights into the company's commitment to innovative formulations and product development. He shared, "When developing our products, we build formulations around key ingredients, ensuring stability and efficacy." This approach is evident in their success with retinol, where proprietary know-how stabilizes the ingredient, minimizing irritation.

Focus on Education and Pre-Aging Research

Kizoulis expressed pride in the company's dedication to education and research, particularly in the emerging field of pre-aging. "We believe understanding the changes in the skin during the pre-aging phase will inform us about the right interventions and product development," he noted. The concept of pre-aging is expected to be an area of opportunity for both dermatologists and consumers seeking effective options to delay the signs of aging.5
