Patients’ desires for skin rejuvenation continue to grow, and dermatology providers have had to adapt to the increased demands in their practices. A poster presentation from SCALE 2023 published by Gold et al sought to examine 2 creams containing 2 creams Macrocystispyrifera ferment for skin rejuvenation.1

The study investigators noted that as the demand for facial skin rejuvenation increases, “specialized aesthetic skin care treatments may be one of the first steps to help prevent or treat facial signs of aging.” To examine the 2 creams, Gold et al met to discuss the challenges and practices in using skin care for facial rejuvenation, combining their expert opinions and experiences on facial rejuvenation with preclinical and clinical data on 2 creams containing Macrocystis pyrifera ferment and a review of the literature.

From their discussions and research of preclinical and clinical data, the study investigators determined the following results:

  • Preclinical and clinical studies on Macrocystis pyrifera ferment and 2 creams containing Macrocystis pyrifera ferment exhibited anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties.
  • In preclinical studies, ex vivo skin biopsies treated with Macrocystis pyrifera ferment exhibited histological enhancement of collagen type 1 and other dermal matrix components.
  • In preclinical studies, fibroblasts treated with Macrocystis pyrifera ferment migrated faster than untreated cells.
  • In clinical studies measuring visible anti-inflammatory activity, Macrocystis pyrifera ferment and products containing the ferment significantly decreased erythema.
  • In clinical studies measuring anti-aging parameters, products with Macrocystis pyrifera ferment significantly improved skin aging parameters.
  • In clinical studies on the stratum corneum, the 2 creams increased moisture levels, and decreased transepidermal water loss, reflecting healing by enhancing barrier strength and recovery.

In their case photos and figures, the study investigators explained that the topical application of Macrocystis Pyrifera ferment on human skin explants, at levels found in the creams, notably increases dermal proteins after 9 days of treatment. In one review, a Caucasian 44-year-old female patient with Fitzpatrick skin phototype II saw above-average improvement in skin redness after once-a-day application of Macrocystis pyrifera ferment-containing cream for 12 weeks.

Gold et al also referenced a clinical anti-aging study (n=58) of US female patients (aged 39-65 years) with Fitzpatrick skin phototypes I-VI who applied Macrocystis pyrifera ferment-containing cream once a day for 12 weeks. Visible aging parameters – wrinkles/crow’s feet, wrinkles/glabellar, fine lines/forehead, fine lines/under eye, the appearance of the nasolabial fold, redness/blotchiness, skin tone evenness, texture—were graded by experts on a scale of 0 to 9 at baseline, at weeks 2, 4, 8 and 12. Significant improvements were shown in all aging parameters in over 50% of the patients.

Macrocystis pyrifera ferment-containing creams are effective skin care treatment products to decrease the visible effects of inflammation and signs of aging while promoting healing by enhancing skin barrier resilience and recovery,” concluded Gold et al.
