Volunteers tee off on skin cancer with free exams and outreach at LPGA event

Havre de Grace, Md. - Skin cancer screenings and sun safety outreach were offered at one of the major tournaments in the women’s professional golf tour, SunHerald.com reports.

During the McDonald’s LPGA (Ladies’ Professional Golf Association) Championship, held here recently, a team of volunteers representing the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS) conducted screenings under the organization’s “Play Safe in the Sun” program, a three-year community-outreach service offered in collaboration with L’Oréal USA.

WDS members and Maryland board-certified dermatologists co-hosted the event, and along with a team of volunteers offered free skin cancer screenings and sun safety information to tournament spectators.

In addition, dermatologists conducted private skin cancer screenings and sun damage assessments for a record number of LPGA Tour players, caddies and sportswriters during a special day of outreach designed to boost awareness of the risks of prolonged sun exposure.

According to SunHerald.com, about 30 percent of the individuals screened were referred to dermatologists for further management of lesions that looked suspicious for skin cancer or pre-cancer.

Product donations for the public, players and members of the media also were provided by Garnier, Lancome, SkinCeuticals and La Roche-Posay.
