Allergan’s CoolTone device receives FDA clearance

Yesterday, Allergan announced FDA clearance for its CoolTone device, designed to tone, firm and strengthen the buttocks, thighs and abdomen. CoolTone works by using MMS (Magnetic Muscle Simulation) technology to create muscle contractions that stimulate muscle fibers, which results in muscle strength and conditioning.

Long-time CoolSculpting proponent Grant Stevens believes it’s a natural extension of Allergan’s long-established body sculpting business.

“By partnering with Allergan, I can offer my patients additional options in body contouring solutions,” Grant Stevens, M.D, Marina Plastic Surgery, was quoted in Allergan’s CoolTone press release. “CoolSculpting®, for non-surgical fat reduction, is one of the most requested treatments in my practice, and now I can introduce my patients to CoolTone for muscle toning, strengthening and firming of the abdomen, buttocks and thighs.”

CoolTone joins Emsculpt in the marketplace as a muscle toning technology. Emsculpt uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology to induce around 20,000 supramaximal muscle contractions during each 30-minute session. Providers can use the device to treat the abdominals and buttocks, as well as arms and legs with a small device applicator, according to BTL.

Allergan reports that it is now taking orders for the CoolTone device, and first units will ship early in the fourth quarter of this year.
