Rollout Begins for EON Touchless Fat Reduction Device

Author(s):

Dominion’s EON device shows safety and efficacy in subcutaneous fat reduction, according to EON study investigator, Thomas Fiala, MD, FACS.

Dominion Aesthetic Technologies has launched its noncontact fat reduction device, EON, in the first quarter of 2021.1 The FDA cleared the device in mid-2019 to reduce abdominal fat, according to Christian Bloomgren, president and chief commercial officer at Dominion.2

In late 2020, the company achieved a few major milestones, he said.

“One, we initiated manufacturing through our partnership with Cogmedix, which is a manufacturer, and got that underway so we would have devices available to be placed,” Bloomgren says. “Second, we proved out the commercial concept with some pilot accounts. We have already achieved our first 50 sales on a priority wait list and expect to accelerate sales in the latter part of 2021 well above that number.”

Plastic surgeon Thomas Fiala, MD, FACS, Fiala Aesthetics Plastic Surgery and Associated Services, Orlando, Florida, and EON study investigator,3 says EON induces apoptosis of subcutaneous fat.

The study was presented at the virtual Annual Meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2020.3 “This is the breakdown and reabsorption of fat cells using the body’s natural mechanisms, and is the proven method used by several current body contouring devices,” Fiala says.

Although competitor CoolSculpting4 (Allergan) triggers apoptosis by cooling fat, EON does so by heating subcutaneous fat with a 1064 nm diode laser, according to Fiala.

EON is a touchless robotic laser device that scans the body to create a custom treatment that is contoured to the patient’s needs. It then delivers the laser energy through a touchless system, according to Bloomgren.

A key differentiator is that EON keeps the skin surface cool while heating the subcutaneous fat using a noncontact system—a robotic arm that moves the treatment head, which has both laser heating and cold-air jet-cooling capabilities, according to Fiala.

“Because the most popular area for body contouring is the abdomen, our initial studies have focused on that area,” Fiala says. “We looked at what happens after just 1 treatment with EON, following patients for 3 months. In the latest study, where I was studying some upgrades on the preproduction model, there was an average of 21.6% thickness reduction in the subcutaneous fat of the abdomen, which we determined with ultrasound measurements performed by an independent certified ultrasonographer.”

The fat reduction percentage compares favorably with competitors' products, he says.

“Patient satisfaction with both the results of the treatment and the treatment comfort itself was very high,” Fiala says. “Patients didn’t need any medication for their treatment or their recovery, and from a safety point of view, there were no major adverse effects or device-related issues.”

Fiala says 1 patient developed a small zone of temporary firmness after treatment, which went away by itself before the study’s end.

EON can be used on all skin colors and types, Fiala adds.

EON treatment for a full abdomen takes 60 to 90 minutes for a single treatment with 1 device, he says.

“I believe the EON will prove to be more comfortable than the contact body contouring devices, like the SculpSure (Cynosure)5 and the various RF devices. We’re planning additional studies to look at that, down the road,” he says.

As with other body contouring technology options, the ideal candidate for EON is a healthy adult with localized fat deposits. It is not designed as a weight-loss method. Patients need to have realistic expectations about what can be achieved without surgery, according to Fiala.

“While the EON can treat all types of skin, currently, we don’t treat over areas that are tattooed, as those heat differently than normal skin,” Fiala says.
